New hotel lobby ‘study’ on short-term rentals purposefully misleading

ARLINGTON, VA – The Travel Technology Association (Travel Tech), the premiere trade association for leaders in online travel innovation, released the following statement in response to the American Hotel and Lodging Association’s (AH&LA) latest attack on the short-term rental marketplace:

“Here we go again.  The hotel lobby, desperate to advance their policy agenda, has purchased yet another study that deliberately misrepresents the reality of short-term rentals,” said Matt Kiessling, Travel Tech’s VP of short-term rental policy. “AH&LA’s only real concern with short-term rentals is how they impact traditional hotel pricing, especially in peak times. Hotel occupancy rates are at an all-time high, but the availability of affordable short-term rentals diminishes their ability to price gouge consumers during periods of high demand.”

“Any study that labels property managers who list apartments and homes for rent on behalf of individual homeowners or the hotels and motels using these platforms to market rooms as ‘multi-unit hosts’ cannot be taken seriously,” Kiessling continued.  “These ‘research’ efforts are poorly disguised legislative campaigns from a hotel lobby more concerned with getting local governments to protect the profits of major hotel chains than the hundreds of thousands of homeowners earning valuable income by renting out their homes to travelers.  A growing travel and tourism economy is good for everyone.  It should be embraced and celebrated.”
